Applications:
Ulex europaeus agglutinin I (UEA) is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 63 kDa, although multimeric aggregates have been reported. UEA I has two subunits, one of about 31 kDa and another of 32 kDa. UEA I binds to many glycoproteins and glycolipids containing α -linked fucose residues, such as ABO blood group glycoconjugates. This lectin preferentially binds blood group O cells and has been used to determine secretor status. It has been established as an excellent marker for human endothelial cells.
UEA isolated from Ulex europaeus (Furze gorse) seeds is coupled with Separopore®4B-CL. Heat stable, cross-linked 4% agarose beads with a molecular weight exclusion limit of about 2 x 107 are used as the solid-phase matrix to which the lectin is covalently bound. The attachment of the lectin to the solid phase is controlled so that the activity of the lectin preserved and conformational changes of the bound lectin are minimized.
