Substrate for α-Galactosidase that is converted, by the enzyme, into an intense indigo-blue chromophore (615 nm). It is used for differentiating alpha-Galactosidase positive yeast strains or bacteria (e.g. bifidobacteria). It has been used in histochemistry for the detection of enzyme activity in tissue with a light microscope.
