Lagosin or 14-HYDROXYFILIPIN is a pentaene antifungal antibiotic produced by Streptomyces. It was first isolated in 1958 by researchers at MIT in the USA. Lagosin exhibits broad spectrum antifungal and antitumor activity and, like filipin, acts via interaction with cell membrane sterols.Structurally, lagosin is 14-hydroxyfilipin III and the most polar member of the filipin family of fungicides. 

In a recent study 14-HYDROXYFILIPIN was used to evaluate its efficacy on candida albicans biofilm formation. The results revealed that 14-HYDROXYFILIPIN  has an inhibitory effect on the formation of C. albicans biofilm in a dose-dependent manner with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 10 µg/mL. It also showed that 14-HYDROXYFILIPIN could also induce the apoptosis of C. albicans cells in a dose-dependent manner.
