An aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits translation by binding to the small subunit of prokaryotic ribosomes. Also has high binding affinity to phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP₂).

We have demonstrated that neomycin was effective as secondary prophylaxis for irinotecan-induced diarrhea in three patients, and may have contributed to the prevention of diarrhea in a further two patients.¹Neomycin as secondary prophylaxis for irinotecan-induced diarrhea, A.
