Monazomycin is active against Gram positive bacteria with weak Gram negative activity. In solution, monazomycin exists as hydrophilic clusters which, when adsorbed onto a lipid bilayer, can induce channel formation. Monazomycin is an important bioprobe for understanding membrane channels.
