The hydrochloride is the preferred formulation for pharmaceutical applications. Like all tetracyclines, methacycline hydrochloride shows broad spectrum antibacterial and antiprotozoan activity and acts by binding to the 30S and 50S ribosomal subunits, blocking protein synthesis.
