The ViPrimePLUS Escherichia coli O104:H4 qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Escherichia coli O104:H4 genomes in faecal, food or water samples.
Escherichia coli (E. coli) refers to a diverse group of Gram negative bacteria that resides in the animal and human intestinal tract. Most of them serve as the normal flora in a healthy intestinal tract but some strains are pathogenic. Mode of transmission is normally through contaminated food and water source. The pathogens are divided into 6 pathotypes, i.e. Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), Enteropathogenic E. coli, (EPEC), Enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC), Enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC) and Diffusely adherent E. coli (DAEC). EHEC pathotype, which is also known as Shiga-toxin or Verocytotoxin producing E. coli, is responsible for most of the foodborne outbreaks. E. coli 0104:H4 is a rare EHEC strains or EAEC that has acquired the Shiga toxin gene. The outbreak in 2011 has causes global commotion resulting in enhanced food security monitoring. It causes bloody diarrhea, which is normally self-limiting with low mortality risk if treated properly.
