Description
The ViPrimePLUS Streptococcus pyogenes qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Streptococcus pyogenes genomes in clinical samples (e.g. sputum and nasopharyngeal secretions).
Streptococcus pyogenes is a beta-hemolytic bacterium that belongs to group A streptococci (GAS). The pathogen causes a wide variety of respiratory tract, skin and invasive systemic infections. The infection usually begins with symptoms like sore throat and mild skin irritation such as impetigo. Invasive strains may spread to the lower skin epithelial layers, resulting in cellulitis and necrotizing fasciitis, which in turn will lead to amputation. Some S. pyogenes strains also release toxins such as erythrogenic toxin, streptolysin O and streptolysin S which cause scarlet fever and the streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (TSS). Scarlet fever is characterized by fever, a 'strawberry tongue' and a fine sandpaper rash over the upper body. TSS may result in multiorgan failure if immediate treatment is not sought after. Treatment is usually with a course of penicillin.
