Description
The ViPrimePLUS Rabies Virus RT-qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Rabies Virus genome in clinical samples (e.g. throat swab, saliva and cerebrospinal fluid).
Rabies virus is a single-stranded RNA virus that infects animal and human. Being a zoonosis infection, animal bites, especially by rabid dogs, is the most common cause. Other routes of transmission includes aerosol path by bats and tissue transplantation. The virus will spread to the brain through the nervous system, causing the acute encephalitis which is often fatal. Clinical symptoms include numbness at bite site, high fever, hydrophobia and hallucination. Production of excessive saliva and tears, in addition to difficulty in swallowing and speaking are typical in the later disease stage. There are approximately 50 000 deaths each year globally due to rabies. No effective treatments for rabies are currently available, thus the only effective option is to try to prevent the rabies virus spreading from the bite site to the brain and nervous system by standard wound treatment and post exposure rabies immunization.
