Description
The ViPrimePLUS Polyomavirus JC qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Polyomavirus JC genome in clinical samples (e.g. blood, tissue, urine and respiratory fluids).
Polyomaviruses are double-stranded DNA virus that is potentially oncogenic as implicated in the name poly (multiple) -oma (tumour). There are 3 polyomaviruses most relevant to human disease, i.e. JC virus, BK virus and Simian Virus 40 (SV40). While SV40 is a common pathogen to monkeys, JC and BK virus are ubiquitous in human where primary infections typically occur in childhood (3-4years old for BK virus and 7-10years old for JC virus). Signs of infection are mild and asymptomatic. After the initial infection, the viruses established latency in various tissues, especially the renal tissue. Reactivation may occur in immunocompromised individuals resulting in respiratory and urinary tract disease by BK virus and meningoencephalitis by JC virus infection. The potentially tumorigenic SV40 virus was introduced to human population via contaminated polio vaccines produced from SV40-infected monkey cells. Detection of those viruses in the kidney, bone tissues and peripheral blood suggested organ transplantation and blood transfusion as the routes for horizontal transmission in human, aside from the fecal-oral route.
