Description
The ViPrimePLUS Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease Virus RT-qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease Virus genome in tissue samples such as spleen, lymph node, liver and lungs, and unclotted whole blood.
Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (EHDV) is a single stranded RNA virus which is responsible for the epizootic hemorrhagic disease a.k.a. Ibaraki disease in deer, especially the white-tailed deer. EHD occurs in North American, Australia, Asia and Africa. There are 10 serogroups identified where each has different geographical distribution. Some of them can also affect cattle and most of other ruminants. The Ibaraki virus is the EHD serotype 2 discovered from the Japan, Korea and Taiwan outbreaks. The virus is very contagious and spreads very quickly in a herd of deer. There are 3 forms of syndromes observed in the infected deer; 1) Peracute form where high fever, anorexia, respiratory distress and edema of the head are seen, 2) Acute disease which is accompanied by haemorrhages in the skin, heart and gastrointestinal tract, and the 3) Chronic form where the recovered deer develop abnormal hooves, which paralyzes them, and ulceration in the rumen. No vaccines are available for EHDV, except for Ibaraki virus which is currently being used in Japan.
