Description
The ViPrimePLUS Naegleria qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Naegleria genomes in clinical samples (e.g. brain tissue and cerebrospinal fluids).
Naegleria spp. is one of the free-living amoebas that cause primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) in humans. Out of more than 30 species discovered, only N. fowleri is associated with human disease. Being a thermophilic organism, Naegleria are found in soil and warm freshwater source including swimming pools, hot springs, sewage, domestic water supplies and thermally polluted water from power plant. Unlike the Acanthamoeba and Balamuthia, N. fowleri is not an opportunistic pathogen as it causes acute, fulminant, necrotizing and hemorrhagic meningoencephalitis leading to death in healthy children and young *****s. The onset of symptoms is rapid following the exposure, starting with the loss of smell, nausea and seizures. Infected individuals often die from respiratory failure as the infection spreads to the brain stem after around two weeks. Poor prognosis is mainly due to the late diagnosis and treatment.
