Description
The ViPrimePLUS Acanthamoeba qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of all Acanthamoeba species genomes in clinical samples (e.g. cerebrospinal fluid).
Acanthamoeba is one of the few free-living amoebas, including Naegleria, Balamuthia mandrillaris and Sappinia diploidea that cause central nervous system (CNS) infections in human. As there are no human carrier state and insect vector, the pathogen is acquired from environment with poor sanitation, which enters via breaks in the skin epithelial layer or inhalation of the cysts. It commonly causes amebic keratitis, usually among those contact lens wearers, which can be detrimental to the sight if left unattended. Prognosis for the disease is good when treated early. In more severe, rare cases, granulomatous amebic encephalitis (GAE) and disseminated granulomatous amebic disease (eg, skin, sinus, and pulmonary infections) may occur in immunocompromised patients.
