Description
The ViPrimePLUS Encephalitozoon qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Encephalitozoon genomes in faeces, urine sediment or tissue samples.
Encephalitozoon is a single cell protozoan which commonly causes diseases in animals and humans. There are 4 species which infects humans, resulting in clinical symptoms such as E. intestinalis that causes diarrhea and cholecystits, E. cuniculi that causes encephalitis and E. hellum that causes keratoconjunctivitis. On the other hand, the zoonotic pathogen, E. cuniculi is also an important pathogen in rabbits, rodents, guinea pigs, foxes, cats and dogs. Three strains of E. cuniculi have been characterized, which are; type 1 from dogs, type 2 from rodents, type 3 from rabbits. Co-habitation with pets resulted in common infection from type 1 and type 3 in humans. Clinical manifestations are usually only found in immunocompromised individuals such as patients with HIV, organ transplant recipient and cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy. Approximately 8-10% of the AIDS population in the United States is clinically infected with E. intestinalis or Enterocytozoon bieneusi.
