Description
The ViPrimePLUS Infectious Hematopoietic Necrosis Virus RT-qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Infectious Hematopoietic Necrosis Virus genome in salmon fish samples.
Infectious Hematopoietic Necrosis Virus (IHNV) is a RNA virus which causes chronic disease in salmon and trout. IHNV is primarily found in the Pacific coast of the USA, Canada and Japan with different clinical isolates being responsible for disease in each area. Fish importation activity has introduced the disease to Europe and Asia, too. The virus is shed in urine, sexual fluids and external mucous and it can survive in the water for at least one month, thus the water-borne transmission. Vertical transmission has also been recorded. Once IHNV enters the host via the digestive tract and gills, it then attacks the internal organs of the host, especially spleen and kidney, causing necrosis of the tissue. Mortality mainly occurs due to edema and haemorrhage as the osmotic balance is impaired. Among the preventive steps taken to control the spread of the diseases include farm sanitation and disinfection of eggs. Raising the water temperature may limit the spread as well. Further research is needed to develop a more effective vaccine.
