Description
The ViPrimePLUS African Trypanosomiasis qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of African Trypanosomiasis genomes in clinical samples (e.g. blood).
African Trypanosomiasis is known as the human sleeping sickness caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense (95%) and Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense. This vector-borne parasitic disease is endemic in sub-Saharan Africa, where the tsetse fly vector is found. It is transmitted to human via the faeces of the fly near the bite wound. Another type of trypanosomiasis that occurs in Latin America is known as Chagas' disease which is caused by a different species of parasite. Currently the estimated actual cases are 30,000, which showed a great reduction compared to 50 years ago due to continuous prevention effort. The first stage haemolymphatic phase showed symptoms of fever, headaches and joint aches. The progression to the second stage entails the parasitic invasion of the blood-brain-barrier, thus infecting the central nervous system and causing neurological disorder. Without treatment, sleeping sickness is fatal.
